WARMUP
Summary
Do each trick 5 times, or a maximum number of 10 tries per trick
Note: If you’re unable to perform any of these tricks, scroll down for more details and alternatives you can work on
- Every manual
- Every pivot
- Every ollie
- Every shove-it
- Every 180
- Every kickflip
- Every heelflip
Intro
Try out this warmup daily. The purpose is two-fold. One, to warm your muscles and joints up prior to a skate session. The second, the tricks are all base tricks for much more complex tricks, so it forces you to keep consistent on all of your base tricks.
If you’re not used to riding you skateboard both regular and goofy, go out and ride around both ways every opportunity that you have. Skate to school. Skate to the store. Just ride. You can also start working on this warmup, even if you use a skateboard with no wheels, but your main focus should be riding when you first start skating. Learn to push with both feet. Ride, ride, ride, and get used to turning.
If you would like to read more information about how this warmup was crafted, or information about SkateboardWOD in general, please go and read the About page.
Try to run through as much of this warmup as you can. If you get to a point where you’re unable to do the tricks, please read the suggestions for some alternatives.
Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!
1 – Manual all
Do each trick 5 times
- Manual as far as you can
- Nose manual as far as you can
- Switch manual as far as you can
- Fakie manual as far as you can
Advanced: Do the manual on a manual pad, or do a trick into your manual, or do a trick out.
Alternate: If you’re not very comfortable on your skateboard, you likely need to ride around more.
Tip: Try different foot positions to figure out what you’re most comfortable with.
1 – Pivot madness
Do each one 5 times, or a maximum of 10 tries each
- 5x Ride fakie then pivot backside to regular
- 5x Ride fakie then pivot frontside to regular
- 5x Ride nollie (rolling regular) then pivot frontside to switch
- 5x Ride nollie (rolling regular) then pivot backside to switch
Advanced: You can ollie on to the nose/tail and pivot after, or combine the two pivots together to turn 360, or more, or keep turning in circles.
Alternate: You can pivot without moving, but if you’re unable to pivot even while not moving, you can use a skateboard with no wheels on carpet or concrete to do the pivots.
Tip: Turn your shoulders first. Most problems with pivots or 180’s are to do with your head and shoulders not turning first. Some people find it useful to wind up prior to doing anything with their legs.
Ollie, Ollie, Ollie, Nollie
Do each one 5 times, or a maximum of 10 tries each
- 5x Ollie
- 5x Fakie Ollie
- 5x Switch Ollie
- 5x Nollie
Advanced: If these are easy for you, you can do them on to, over, or down something, or try landing them 5 times in a row instead of 5 times total. This is a warmup, so don’t go throwing yourself off 20 stairs right off the hop.
Alternative: If you are unable to do any of the above tricks, you can instead just stand on your skateboard and lift the nose/tail by pressing down on whatever foot needs to be on the tail/nose. This will let you get used to the balance required. You can do this on the grass if you don’t want your skateboard to move. You may fall when you’re learning the balance required. Make sure you are very comfortable riding around on your skateboard before you try ollies while moving.
Tip: Your ollie will evolve with time. There are a lot of tutorial videos out there that explain how to ollie. Go watch some and practice, practice, practice. Also, put a focus on switch ollie’s as well. Try to land over the bolts, and try different front foot positions for higher or tweaked ollies.
Every shove-it
Do each one 5 times, or a maximum of 10 tries each
- 5x Shove-it
- 5x Frontside Shove-it
- 5x Fakie Shove-it
- 5x Fakie Frontside Shove-it
- 5x Switch Shove-it
- 5x Switch Frontside Shove-it
- 5x Nollie Shove-it
- 5x Nollie Frontside Shove-it
Advanced: You can pop the shove-its if you’re able to. If that’s still easy for you, you can do them on to, over, or down something, or try landing them 5 times in a row instead of 5 times total
Alternate: If you can’t do any of these these shove-its while moving, try them while not moving. If you’re unable to do them while not moving, try them on a carpet or concrete with a skateboard without wheels.
Tip: Try to land over the bolts on your skateboard, and emphasize the shove part of the shove-it.
Every 180
Do each one 5 times, or a maximum of 10 tries each
- 5x Frontside 180
- 5x Backside 180
- 5x Fakie Frontside 180
- 5x Fakie Backside 180
- 5x Switch Frontside 180
- 5x Switch Backside 180
- 5x Nollie Backside 180
- 5x Nollie Frontside 180
Advanced: If these are easy for you, you can do them on to, over, or down something, or try landing them 5 times in a row instead of 5 times total.
Alternate: If you are unable to do any of these 180’s, go back to the Pivot Madness warmup and do that over again. The more you do that, the faster you’ll learn the motion required for 180’s.
Tip: Wind up and start to turn your head and shoulders before popping. Also remember to land over the trucks, but be sure to land with most of your weight on the pivot truck (the truck that will be at the back after the completed 180) so you can pivot the board around if you don’t turn a full 180.
Kickflips and Hellflips
Do each one 5 times, or a maximum of 10 tries each
- Kickflip
- Heelflip
- Fakie Kickflip
- Fakie Heelflip
- Nollie Kickflip
- Nollie Heelflip
- Switch Kickflip
- Switch Heelflip
Advanced: If these are easy for you, you can do them on to, over, or down something, or try landing them 5 times in a row instead of 5 times total
Alternate: Some of these are pretty advanced. If you’re unable to do any of these while moving, try while standing still. If you can’t do them while standing still, substitute your ollie for the given stance.
Tip: Try different foot positions, and watch tutorials on how to do each different trick. These tricks will evolve with time, so just be patient and keep at it.
